Situado en América del Norte, el Mississippi es uno de los ríos más largos e importantes del mundo. Junto con su afluente el Misuri alcanza los 6.800 km de longitud y supone un elemento fundamental en la economía y cultura estadounidenses. Ya en la época precolombina era una importante vía de navegación. Los nativos lo denominaban “Meschacebé”, Padre de las aguas. El río es considerado como uno de los elementos clave en la evolución de las ciudades que se agrupan a su alrededor, tales como Memphis, Minneapolis o Nueva Orleans.
